In Southeast Asia and globally, communities are increasingly besought by great anxieties about the future and real risks to their health and safety. For individuals and organizations who work tirelessly for the promotion and protection of the rights of our communities, these risks are often even greater. Without the right kinds of support, both the short-term and long-term impacts of this tireless work can easily lead to sickness and burnout -- and when those who promote and protect our rights are down, the futures of everyone become even more anxious.
ASC believes that every LGBTQIA+ person has the right to mental health. Many of us face unique and systemic forms of discrimination that directly impact our psychological well-being. The "minority stress" we experience, and situation of “precarity” we face explains how stigma, prejudice, and violence lead to higher rates of mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and self-harm attempts within our own communities. Denying or limiting access to safe and affirming spaces, and access to competent and inclusive care, constitutes a violation of our fundamental human right to health, and freedom from discrimination.
ASC is committed to address fellow LGBTQIA+ advocates right to mental health. As such, we are glad to announce our on-going partnership with Mindcare Club in providing access to mental health support to LGBTQIA+ advocates from Southeast Asia. Through this partnership, referred LGBTQIA+ advocates can access online mental health consultation and counselling. A message from Mindcare Club
For Mindcare Club, whose founder (♰) was also an advocate for LGBTQ people's human rights, ensuring that a person's rights are promoted and protected in their various domains of life is a core principle in our brand of care. While our wellbeing is grounded in how we as individuals are able to respond wisely and gracefully to how life unfolds, how this life unfolds is also highly dependent on how societies operate. With ASEAN SOGIE Caucus, we are honored to be a part of this wise and graceful response to a regional human rights organization by not only helping individuals figure out life but also helping these individuals change societies for the better.
