Capacity Building
We build and enhance capacity and knowledge of human rights defenders
in promoting and protecting the rights of persons of diverse SOGIESC.
ASC has been supporting capacities of local LGBTQIAN+ groups in the ASEAN region via diverse methods, including funding, advising, coaching, training and mentoring.
Since 2015, ASC supported at least 15 initiatives in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Viet Nam. Our support was strategically channeled towards small, unregistered, and community-focused LGBTQIAN+ groups -- those at the very front lines of advocacy.
In doing this work, we consult local groups with regards to their capacity needs so that any interventions done will be relevant to local realities.
We have been mobilizing our resources and prioritize LGBTQIAN+ communities outside urban centers and mainstream advocacy networks.
From the period of 2019-2023, we have supported 140 Local Initiatives of LGBTQIAN+ organizations in Southeast Asia.
These include those supported through the Rainbow Reach Out, ASEAN Queer Leadership, Southeast Asian Queer Cultural Festival, the series of creative and cultural initiatives, and other forms of technical support extended to local LGBTQIAN+ organizations
